Social Care For The Elderly

Whereas medical care can include social components, social care in itself is not covered by insurance. Traditional elderly care provided for social needs with interaction among the extended family members. Still, the social needs of elders are considered by most societies with reduced prices for activities, recreation center senior programs, and other free community events.

Traditional support for the elderly came from family and community. However, with changing attitudes came the idea of organized outside support groups. Active seniors find support in areas of interests, such as crafts, gardening, golf, et cetera. Churches, recreation center, and colleges promote senior involvement. Besides declining mobility, one of the greatest loses of independence comes when the elder adults can no longer drive themselves places. Many communities have inexpensive or free transportation to meet this need. One of the best support services involves a social worker or case worker who coordinates the many agencies providing various services. Hospitals, physicians, and city halls can direct persons to this service.
